- <p> U.S. and Canadian air-safety experts are comparing notes
- on the often dangerous ways cigarette addicts try to foil
- lavatory smoke detectors. Smokers frequently remove batteries
- from the detectors, while other passengers carry shower caps to
- cover the devices. Some smokers have been caught desperately
- blowing smoke into vacuum-operated washbowl drains and toilet
- bowls. Other fliers find legal but far more elaborate methods
- to circumvent the law banning smoking on domestic flights of six
- hours or less. To baccoholics traveling coast to coast have
- been known to book a stopover in Mexico as a legal way of
- obtaining a smoking seat aboard an international flight.
